Sunday, 22 January. TV and Radio Personality “Somizi SomGAGA Mhlongo” cast the Grace Bible church sermon into the spotlight after Dag Heward-Mills (Ghanaian-born Bishop) described homosexuality as “sinful” “unnatural” and “disgusting”.
The guest Pastor was invited to the Grace Bible church in Soweto, where he delivered a sermon. According to the Bible, in the book of Levictus, verse 20:13: “You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female, it is an abomination”. God created animals to procreate according to male and female but on the same breath churches must not use Bible to oppress others.
Meanwhile, Idols SA judge and radio personality Mhlongo, who attends the church on a regularly basis lashed out at the church saying he believed God created him to be who he is. “I am not going to sit here and listen to someone offend me”. “This is who I am, I am gay man. “ Get it straight into your skull….. I will remain gay for the rest of my life. Let God deal with me” He said.
Twitter was buzzing after this drama took place. “I think he was just being dramatic. Pastors preach about a lot of sins and people don’t just walk out of church” wrote @Dintle_Dikome.
The Prevention and Combating of Hate Crimes and Hate Speech Bill were drafted following several racists comments on social media platforms and the outrage by the public. A decision was taken by the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development to criminalise hate speech and racists comments. Religious leaders opposed the Bill as they felt it would restrict them in quoting and preaching Bible verses.
Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development John Jeffrey said the Bill was not about religion, but that would be reviewed to accommodate religion.
The body was still in the consultative process with its 36-member churches to discuss the Bill- Khuthulani Khumalo of the SA Council of Churches.
