Sunday Sun can exclusively reveal that the singer has undergone training to become a sangoma.
Yesterday, his brother Zwai Bala said: “We’re proud of him, we’re supportive as a family.”
Phelo, who is currently based in the Eastern Cape, is the youngest brother of Zwai and Loyiso Bala.
A family member close to him said he has finally accepted his calling to become a sangoma.
The former Joyous Celebration member shocked many when he vanished about two months ago just before their trip to Cameroon.
While many members were busy trying to arrange their visas for the trip, Phelo was relaxed.
“He clearly knew he wasn’t going to be part of the show,” said the source.
The source added that weeks ago Phelo sent a letter to founder Lindelani Mkhize to thank him for the opportunity for being a member of Joyous Celebration.
“He was not specific in his letter, except for saying that he was pursuing other opportunities and needed to grow as an artist,” said the source.
But it was when Phelo told his close friends that after getting ill and doctors couldn’t find anything, he decided to consult a sangoma who told him that he has a calling.
Another family member said: “He’s now happy in the Eastern Cape and has made peace with the situation.”
