When Zulu women reach the age of 21, their parents arrange a coming of age ceremony for them. This ceremony, called ‘umemulo’ in isiZulu, is an indication that the girl is grown up and is ready to accept a boyfriend and get married.
The rituals involve slaughtering of a cow and the traditional Zulu dance Ukusina involving a spear. A woman’s Umemulo ceremony signifies that the she is now ready for marriage.
Mbusi Sokhela aka DJ Sox said: “It’s funny how time flies, just yesterday I used to walk Minnie and my sister Sphe to crèche and fetch them when I come back from school. Today I’m celebrating with her kumemulo wakhe. She has grown to be a wonderful and successful woman.”
The Minister of Home Affairs Malusi Gigaba was there with other celebrities.
