Generations executive producer Mfundi Vundla told Daily Sun his company, MMSV, is coming up with a new script for the soapie, which will be back on air on 1 December.
“But none of the old characters will be included in the new Generations,” Mfundi said.
This means it’s all over for the likes of Ronnie Nyakale (Cosmo), Xoli Zondi (Zodwa) and Tiki Nxumalo (Sompisi).
“It would be difficult for us to include them, since their characters are linked with the 16 cast members who are gone,” Mfundi said.
Nyakale told the People’s Paper he had no idea he was done with Generations.
“You are the first people to contact me,” he said. “I read about all these things in the newspapers because no one talks to me. I’m very sad.”
Veteran actor Patrick Shai, who plays Patrick Tloule, said that it’s sad to hear about other actors being victimised.
“I only just filed our papers at the CCMA on Friday, so we have to wait for another month or so for a date to meet,”
With Skeem Saam replacing Generations in the prime time slot, some people have wondered if the SABC isn’t going to lose viewers. “Not necessarily,” said SABC spokesman Kaizer Kganyago.
“Generations did not start with a stable viewership. The number of people watching it grew over time. Skeem Saam also has a growing viewership, and we hope that when Generations comes back, even more people will be watching.”
The other non-striking actors to get the axe are: Sindi Buthelezi (Zinhle Mathe), Khosi Ndlovu (MaSongo), Sibongile Nojila (Sylvia Mthembu), Ntlantla Liwana (Susan), Siyamthanda Moyo (Christina Dlomo), Carlo Radebe (Sello Mvuyane), Noluvu Ntapo (Patricia), Carina Nel (Isabel van Heerden), Denise Zimba (Mary Gumede), Nyembezi Kunene (Jabulani Dlomo) and Makalo Mofokeng (Hlomhla Nomvete).
