DJ Sbu recently launched his first energy drink, called Mofaya.
Sources close to DJ Sbu said though he was proud of his latest venture, he was shocked that retail giants were not flooding him with requests to stock his brand.
“He’s a hustler of note and his never-say-die spirit is very inspiring. But he’s frustrated because he has to rely on himself and his team to get his brand out there.
Retail stores are not even bothered by his energy drink and now panic is starting to set in,” said a source.
Sbu has marketed his drink actively on social media, but it doesn’t seem to have the desired results.
“Celebrities must stop believing that followers and retweets equate to sales. Not everybody in South Africa is on Twitter. Sbu needs to find a new strategy,” the source said.
DJ Sbu said there’s no need to panic because his strategy was to create demand so that big retail outlets can take note and stock up on his brand.
“I approached one major retailer last year but it’s a long process to get a product on their shelves.
“So I shifted the focus to township supermarkets and small businesses.
“The roll-out is in motion and I will soon announce where people can buy Mofaya in their townships,” he said.
But Sbu said he’s not giving up on his latest attempt at business success.
Mofaya has allegedly been given a start-up cash injection by businessman Tim Tebeila.
