Head wraps have gradually started to make waves in the fashion industry. Doek-wearing is of course, nothing but novel and is a staple part of South Africa. It’s cultural symbol that has grown in style and became one of the most fashionable pieces today.
Kabelo Ntholeng (20) from Reitz, Free state came up with a new style to rock a doek. Ntholeng wears a pair of jeans and wraps it nicely that it looks exactly like a doek. She started posting pictures of a new doek style on Facebook and it went viral.
“I saw it from a friend of mine who resides in Jo’burg, Jabusile. I then decided to rock it more than her, I noticed it became popular after my posts” she said.
According to Ntholeng, she strongly believes that she carries her dignity as a woman through her doek and fashion sense. Lot of women like her do not like artificial hair and finds it hard to look beautiful without styling their natural hair at all times. When it comes to a doek, she can portray her respect and still look beautiful. The interesting part is that one can tie a doek in ways that varies.
She continued to say jeans can be turned into something one could have never thought of. Everyone has a pair of jeans, instead of throwing your jeans away when it’s torn or small you can simply wrap it around your head during bad hair days.
“It’s a very innovative trend because no one ever thought that you could take a pair of jeans and wrap it around your head as a headwrap, and it’s quite popular”- Keletso Tau, Owner and Photographer of W&K Creative Studio.
South African women wears doek because traditionally it’s a sign of respect and gives them a layer of confidence and strength.
